Sunshine Public Hospital

The Project

As part of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, Sunshine Public Hospital is benefitting from both a Pharmacy Expansion and the Mental Health Beds Expansion Program.

Once complete, this expansion will deliver an additional 52 beds at Sunshine Public Hospital. This will grant 1,150 more people the access they need to vital mental health services each year.

PROFINISH Fire Protection was contracted to supply and implement a $1 million multi-scope passive fire protection solution including the treatment of structural steel, service penetrations, structural columns and beams, voids, flooring and fire-stopping penetrations.

The Problem

Lendlease faced a range of problems when trying to find a passive fire protection provider who had the resources and relationships to address the necessary requirements:

• They could not find compliant/tested solutions for the fire-rated duct risers prior to engaging PROFINISH. Multiple subcontractors reviewed the problem without finding any solutions. 
• They found a shortage of labour across other companies which was delaying the program.
• They had missed the building window to install fire-stopping penetrations so they needed a solution for retrofitting post-build.
• One design flaw meant the façade was fixed directly into the vermiculite but we identified this as being non-compliant.
• Lendlease had no protective solution for a lot of holes/penetrations both new and existing but needed a fast resolution due to incredibly tight time restraints.
• The Pharmacy Expansion had time restraints and was falling behind due to delivery delays in this area.

The Solution

Because we are a specialised, full-service passive fire company, we have built many relationships with suppliers and are familiar with tested systems. This enabled us to design and propose a compliant solution to meet all project requirements. We were also able to identify and rectify any non-compliance issues including retrofitting fire-stopping penetrations to supply a central penetrations register.

Our team was also engaged to speed up the program on the job. Because of our large and flexible labour availability, we were able to commit extra time and work around the clock with multiple crews to meet tight deadlines.

PROFINISH Fire Protection services included:

Pharmacy Expansion

• Fire protection to all new and existing steel in the pharmacy section using Promat’s cafco300, Mandolite CP2 and Promatect P250.
• Treatment of service penetrations using multiple products such as TBA Firefly and Promat.

Mental Health Beds Expansion Program

• Treatment of service penetrations using multiple products such as TBA Firefly and Promat.
• Fire protection to structural columns and beams throughout the main build and riser shaft using Promat’s Promatect P250 board.
• Fire-rating difficult voids around mechanical dampers using Promat materials.
• Rectifying defects in fire-rated flooring systems.
• Complete penetration audits at certain stages of the build.
